Abstract

"The aim ... is to publish the best research on cement, cement composites, concrete and other allied materials that incorporate cement. In doing so, the journal will present: the results of research on the properties and performance of cement and concrete; novel experimental techniques; the latest analytical and modelling methods; the examination and the diagnosis of real cement and concrete structures; and the potential for improved materials."

Abstract

Modern hydraulic binders can be used effectively with Portland cement and supplementary cementitious materials to produce durable concrete. They also provide a means of recycling by-products from other industries and of decreasing the emission of greenhouse gases. The first binders were discovered in ancient times when it was observed that new pozzolans mixed with lime could harden under water; and in the middle of the nineteen century the first artificial hydraulic binder, Portland cement, was discovered. By modifying the four basic oxides in the limestone and clay mix used in the production of Portland cement it is possible to modify significantly the practical properties of the clinker, and consequently the performance of the fresh and hardened concrete in which it is used. Chemical admixtures can be used to disperse cement particles without the use of extra water, and so make concrete which is highly resistant to penetration by aggressive agents and of high durability and strength. Supplementary cementitious materials or fillers can be mixed with Portland cement to produce modern hydraulic binders and improve the ecological performance of concrete. The hydration process of a modern hydraulic binder is becoming quite complex because it involves the chemical reactivity of Portland cement clinker, of supplementary cementitious materials and of different types of admixtures. This has already resulted in great technological achievements such as high-performance concrete, self leveling concrete, confined concrete, high-performance roller compacted concrete, fiber reinforced concrete, and reactive powder concrete.

Abstract

Engineers have a range of sophisticated techniques at their disposal to evaluate the condition of reinforced concrete structures and non-destructive evaluation plays a key part in assessing and prioritising where money should be spent on repair or replacement of structurally deficient reinforced concrete structures. Non-destructive evaluation of reinforced concrete structures, Volume 2: Non-destructive testing methods reviews the latest non-destructive testing techniques for reinforced concrete structures and how they are used.Part one discusses planning and implementing non-destructive testin

Abstract

From the Foreword by Kenneth Frampton: "Concrete remains a valuable historical text that in many respects has never been given its due. It is an unmatched pioneering history of the development of reinforced concrete up to 1914. It records and analyses the densely articulated, if provincial, English debate with respect to the aesthetic challenge posed by the increasing popularity of concrete from around 1870 onwards. Finally, until very recently it was the only readily available monograph on Auguste Perret in English. In this regard it is particularly valuable as a thorough and perceptive assessment of Perret's life and career, one that still stands as a point of departure for all current attempts to situate this seminal architect within the wider trajectory of twentieth-century culture."

Abstract

"This journal is designed to reflect current developments and advances being made in the general field of cement-concrete composites technology and in the production, use, and performance of cement-based construction materials in general. The word cement is interpreted here in a wide sense to include not only Portland cement but also other matrices such as composite cements, resins, polymers and sulphur. The journal will therefore cover a wide range of composite materials such as fibre cement/concrete composites, polymer cement composites, polymer impregnated composites ferrocement resin concretes, lightweight, wood composites, use of waste material, composite cements, adhesion bonding and fibre reinforced plastics as applied to construction, and material and structural composite systems."
